What is a Simulation?

The word simulation is often used to apply to any type of learning that is an experience. Learning experiences are a helpful way to make knowledge useful and lasting. Not every type of learning experience is a true simulation, however. Other types of experiential learning are valuable, and will be addressed in this blog later. It is important that simulations are defined to reduce confusion.

A simulation must fit three criteria:
1. The people taking part are role-playing a scenario. It may or may not be based on a real scenario but no one is taking part in actual events.
2. Participation is active. People must make decisions and act on them.
3. Debriefing happens. The scenario must include a time when you stop pretending and analyze how the scenario played out.
