Mentors for Moms: Charlotte Mason

When our family first made the decision to homeschool, I read every homeschooling related book I could find in our local library system. One of the books that influenced me the most at that time was A Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola. I was opened up to a new idea about what education could be for my children and myself. My oldest was still very young, but we embarked on a path of learning which included whole books. Since that time, we have included in our homeschool day a family reading time that includes small sections of a number of books. We have read so many books during this time that it would be difficult to name them all, but here are some subjects we have covered by just reading a small amount at a time with other books: World history, U.S. History, writing, math, a wide variety of science topics, logic, health, leadership skills, grammar, literature, poetry, study skills, art history, music appreciation, and character. This is probably not a comprehensive list because I am trying to remember around thirteen years of books. We usually read and discuss an hour a day.

I consider Karen Andreola and Charlotte Mason to be some of my mentors, even though I have never met either one of them. Great ideas and the people who share those great ideas with us are some of our best mentors. When I began my search for homeschooling materials and ideas, there were very few resources on the internet. That has changed and now there are many resources. Books continue to offer a depth of experience that can be beneficial. They allow authors to speak across time and distance, to cover a topic deeply, and to offer their insights.

What kind of people have Mentored you by authoring a book you enjoyed?
