The Great Books and New Bookmarks

My husband and I have taken on the goal of reading The Great Books set together, as I mentioned in an earlier blog post. After some discussion, we decided to read Volumes 1-3 before venturing to read the 10 year reading plan. Volume One is titled the Great Conversation and it is an introduction to the collection and also an explanation for what books were selected and why reading great books is a valuable part of becoming educated. Volumes Two and Three are the syntopicon, a summary of all the great ideas discussed throughout the Great Books. We felt that reading through the syntopicon would help us grasp the scope of the books. It has been fascinating for both of us and we have gained a better understanding of how the classic books have truly been a conversation between some of the best minds that have lived. What a privilege it is to read their words and know their thoughts!

In my last post about the Great Books set, I included bookmarks with the reading list for the first three years. I have compiled a new page of bookmarks for years 4-6. Find the new bookmark for the Great Books years 4-6 here.
